I’ve just read this piece by Steven Levy on the early days of the spreadsheet. It was written when spreadsheets were brand new and offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. The conclusion caught my eye:
“Fortunately, few would argue that all relations between people can be quantified and manipulated by formulas. Of human behavior, no faultless assumptions – and so no perfect model — can be made.”
Thirty years on, and a bunch of very smart people are having a run at doing exactly that. Tech world got way too high on its own supply.
